As of the census of 2000, there were 4,855 people, 1,844 households, and 1,300 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,988.3 people per square mile (768.2/km²). There were 1,968 housing units at an average density of 806.0/sq mi (311.4/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 97.98% White, 0.45% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.16% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.74% of the population.
There were 1,844 households out of which 38.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.3% were married couples living together, 11.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.5% were non-families. 24.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the village the population was spread out with 28.8% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 12.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 89.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.8 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $43,750, and the median income for a family was $50,179. Males had a median income of $34,787 versus $25,902 for females. The per capita income for the village was $20,014. About 4.1% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.1% of those under age 18 and 8.8% of those age 65 or over.
The schools in the district are on average about 300 students in Lake Street Elementary and Bolivar Road Elementary, 400 students in Bridgeport Elementary, 600 students in Chittenango Middle School, and 800 students in Chittenango High School, or about 200 students per grade.
